Future racers at Daytona Beach.:

That is Mario and Guido Levetto in Jim Kimberly’s Ferrari. The event is the the Measured Mile speed event held on the sands of Daytona Beach in 1954. Both young men would go on to amateur and professional racing during the 60’s and 70’s. The family owned a great Italian restaurant in the Daytona area called the San Remo. The patriarch of the family was often called on to act as a translator for the France family when the Italian teams came to race at Daytona. Thanks to Mario Levetto for the photo.

Umberto Maglioli at Sebring 1955:

Umberto Maglioli and co-driver Alfonso de Portago drove this Ferrari 750 Monza at the 1955 12-Hours of Sebring. They failed to finish due to gearbox problems. Thanks to Mario Levetto for the photo.

Autoline After Hours: 5 Kilowatts In A Suitcase

Listened to Autoline After Hours today with guest Peter Hofbauer, a former diesel-engine designer at Volkswagen, who is developing a revolutionary new opposed-piston engine. The goal is power the first 5-passenger car capable of 100 mpg on the EPA highway cycle.

The bottom line is that if this engine catches on it could completely do away with the need for plug-in electric and fuel cell powered vehicles by far surpassing their limited range. It would also reduce our dependence on rare or expensive to extract materials that are required to produce the current and next generation power cells.
